Richard Sallis, 2021

Hi, I’m Richard Sallis. Here’s a little something about me (professionally speaking).

I am currently the acting Head of Drama in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) at The University of Melbourne (UoM). I am also co-author of the multi-award-winning texts for VCE students “Acting Smart- Drama” and “Acting Smart – Theatre Studies”.

I have been a playwright, theatre director and educationalist for over 20 years. My speciality area of playwriting is ethnodrama or what I call ‘research-informed theatre’ (Sallis and Bird, 2021). As well as lecturing in drama at the UoM, I am the Chair of the Theatre Board at the university. In the MGSE I am also the Director of Professional Experience. As such I am responsible for the academic oversight of all of the faculty’s school placement experiences (undergraduate and postgraduate).

My research interests are ethnodrama, drama/theatre education, diversity and inclusion in education, Initial Teacher Education, oral histories and storytelling.

I am currently a board member of the Australian Children’s Theatre Foundation. Previously I have been a member of other cultural and educational boards including: Arena Theatre, IDEA (International Drama/theatre and Education Association), Drama Australia, Drama Victoria, Drama Tasmania, the Australian Script Centre, FM Live Theatre, St Martin’s Youth Arts Centre.
